Description:
Diego Alejandro Morales Martell was born on May 20, 1966, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, the only child of José Morales Torres and Sindibett Martell Matías. He attended Monserrate León de Irizarry High School in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. As a junior, he helped lead his teams to state championships in both basketball and baseball, earning a reputation as a gifted and versatile competitor with strong leadership instincts. In 1983, Morales transferred to Loyola High School in Los Angeles, California, for his senior year. His father, José, had taken a position as an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs, prompting the family's move to the mainland. Despite being new to the school, Morales quickly established himself as a dominant quarterback, earning Prep All-American honors and drawing national attention for his athleticism, arm strength, and ability to read defenses. In June 1984, Morales was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 30th round (722nd overall) of the MLB Draft. Rather than committing to college immediately, he reported to the Blue Jays' Gulf Coast League affiliate in Florida that summer, where he spent several months in rookie ball. Though raw, he impressed with his athleticism and hustle, hitting .235 with solid defense in the outfield. Entering USC in the fall of 1984, Morales began his true freshman year behind established starter Sean Salisbury. Though redshirted early in the season, he practiced with the scout team and impressed coaches with his work ethic, accuracy, and calm under pressure. Some insiders have speculated that he may see limited playing time if injuries arise or games get out of hand, a rare situation for freshman QBs in the Pac-10. Off the field, Morales has adjusted to life in Los Angeles with quiet determination. He lives in campus housing, balances team commitments with general education coursework. He remains close to his Puerto Rican roots, writing letters to his family in Puerto Rico and playing guitar in his spare time. He’s known among teammates for being focused, respectful, and more serious than most 19-year-olds, but never arrogant. Looking ahead, Morales is expected to compete for the starting quarterback role in the coming seasons and is widely regarded as one of the most promising young dual-sport athletes in the conference.
